Kathryn Uhl (California, Died, 1999): A California artist and illustrator, Kathryn Uhl graduated from Mills College, Oakland, in 1932. She later accepted a teaching post there in the Art Department, and married the instructor of pottery,Carlton Ball. During the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's Kathryn Uhl was a frequent exhibitor at the annual Crocker-Kingsley exhibitions in Sacramento. She also illustrated several books, the most notable being, Fifth Chinese Daughter, by Jade Snow Wong (1950).

Leon Villevieille (Paris, 1826 - 1863): An outstanding French mid-nineteenth century painter and etcher of landscapes, Leon Villevieille was a pupil of Louis-Marvy, in Paris. He showed great talent at a very early age and was invited to exhibit his art at the prestigious Paris Salon as early as 1850. As one can see by an etching such as, En Picardie, Villevieille was a born master. This great etching was created by an artist barely twenty-four years of age. Tragically, Villevieille 's promising career was cut short by his death in 1863.

Leon Villevieille was a pioneer in the art of creative etching. The great French etching revival of the 1860's which brought forth such huge talents as those of Meryon, Bracquemond, Millet, Corot and others was only possible because such gifted artists as Villevieille paved the way. In some regards the etched art of Villevieille is comparable to the landscape etchings of Appian. Both artists possessed a true reverence for nature which was brought forth in each etched line.

Lucas Vorsterman, The Younger (Antwerp, c. 1605 - 1667): Lucas Vorsterman, the Younger, studied engraving techniques under his celebrated father. Lucas Vorsterman, the Elder, worked under both Rubens and Van Dyck and is considered by many to be the greatest interpretive engraver of these artists. Like his father, Lucas Vorsterman was highly regarded for his portraits. He also, however, was an accomplished engraver of landscapes and figure studies after such masters as Snyders and Holbein. As well, he engraved a number of equestrian subjects after the designs of Diepenbeek.

This portrait of the Flemish painter, Adrian de Bie (1594-1661) formed part of a series of depictions of painters and sculptors which was initially published in Antwerp in 1649 under the title of Images de Diverses Hommes D'Esprit, Qui Par Leur Art et Science. In the somewhat confusing history of this publication, further editions appeared in the following years in both Holland and England with different titles such as, Het Gulden Cabinet and The Portraits of the most Eminent Painters. Each of these subsequent editions saw the inclusion of some new engravings and the deletions of others. Other prominent engravers who contributed portraits to the series included Wenzel Hollar, Paulus Pontius, Pieter de Jode and Jacob Neefs.
