Anton Schutz (Berndorf, Germany, 1894 - New York, 1977): In America architectural art gained its finest era during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Nowhere had the world witnessed such an explosion of building and construction than in the modern American city, most particularly , New York. Buildings and bridges rapidly rose to astounding heights and cityscapes appeared to grow on an almost daily basis. This was a new landscape and a new world and American artists embraced it. The first great artist to delineate the modern cityscape was Joseph Pennell (1860-1926). This influential colleague of Whistler created over one hundred etchings and lithographs of New York City from 1904 to 1924. During the final decade of his life, Pennell also taught at the Art Students' League of New York. Among his many great students was a German immigrant, Anton Schutz.
Anton Schutz emigrated to New York from Germany at the end of World War One (1918). Already an accomplished artist at this time, Schutz had studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich where he was instructed in painting by Groeber and in etching by Peter von Halm. Equally important, Schutz received a degree from Munich's Technical University in the field of architecture. Anton Schutz completed his artistic education under the guidance of Pennell in New York in 1922.
During the 1920's and 1930's, Anton Schutz etched many important city views of Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and his hometown of New York. He also traveled to Berlin, Paris and London and created fine etchings of these cities. His earlier technical training blended with his obvious artistic gifts to make him one of the finest architectural etchers from this important era.
Anton Schutz was a full member of the American Federation of Arts, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers and of the Chicago Society of Etchers. Representative collections of his etchings are now included in the holdings of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
View images, more information and other original works of art by Mel Silverman.
Mel Silverman (Denver, Colorado, 1931 - New York, 1966): Although his life was unfortunately brief, Mel Silverman was one of America's most respected artists during the late 1950's and early 1960's. Equally accomplished as an original printmaker, painter, illustrator and writer, Silverman received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and his B.A.E. from the Art Institute of Chicago. The Institute then awarded him a Fellowship in 1955 which enabled him to work and travel in Europe for a period of one year. Citadel may perhaps be a remembrance of Silverman's European travels.
The first one man exhibition of Silverman's art was held in New York in 1956. During the following ten years he also exhibited extensively in Chicago, Denver and elsewhere. Today, Silverman's original woodcuts and paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the University of Minnesota, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.
View images, more information and other original works of art by Raphael Soyer.
Raphael Soyer (Tombov, Russia, 1899 - New York, 1987): Raphael Soyer is undoubtedly one of America's most famous twentieth century artists. He emigrated to New York City at the age of ten and shortly thereafter studied at the Art Students League while supporting himself and his family by working in factories and selling newspapers. Recognition thankfully came quickly to Soyer and in 1917 he published his first original lithograph. Soyer went on to become one of the greatest chroniclers of life in the Depression era and beyond. A full member of the National Academy, Soyer's original lithographs and paintings are included in most major American and international collections.
One writer states, "The glamour and gaiety of city life or the impressive vistas and mighty skyscrapers that had been attractive subjects for New York painters were ignored by Soyer as he turned toward other kinds of realities and created his compassionate images of less fortunate people. Soyer's sympathetic portrayals of the misfortunate and indigent were untouched by the doctrinaire or harsh commentaries of some of his artist friends." * Along with Kathe Kollowitz, Raphael Soyer's compassion is felt in al his art. (James Watrous, A Century of American Printmaking: 1880-1980, Madison, University of Wisconsin Press, 1984, p. 119)
Until about 1960, all Soyer's lithographic art was black and white. After that date he frequently created colour lithographs and proved himself a master of this medium like any other.
