Donald Shaw Maclaughlan (Charlottetown, P.E.I., 1876 - New York, 1938): Regarded as one of America's finest etchers of the early twentieth century, Donald Shaw MacLaughlan was in fact a Canadian. He was born and raised on a farm in Prince Edward Island, moving with his family to Boston in 1890. To complicate matters of nationality even further, most of Maclaughlan's outstanding works of art were created when he lived and worked first in France and later in Italy. MacLaughlan first studied art in Boston under J. W. O. Hamilton. By 1898, however, he had settled in Paris to complete his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
Within a very short period of time MacLaughlan had established himself as a major international etcher. In 1901 two of his etchings were accepted by the prestigious Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and in 1903 he was elected an Associate of the Salon. Etchings created during this period, such as, Ruelle du Pecheur, proved a major influence to artists of all nationalities. MacLaughlan even instructed other expatriate Canadian artists then living in Paris, most notably Clarence Gagnon and Frank and Caroline Armington. From 1905 to 1914, he lived and worked at Asolo near Venice, Italy.
In 1929 James Laver wrote on MacLaughlan's art: "His is probably the most considerable single achievement of any son of the British Dominions Overseas. It is only the completeness of his technical apparatus which makes his range as an etcher possible. Every process of etching technique, every stage in the production of the finished work, is treated by him almost as part of a religious rite. ... Most modern etchers know how to print, very many of them do their own printing, but few perhaps bestow upon the process the care and labour expended by MacLaughlan. Not content with the mere printing, he always grinds and prepares his ink himself, rightly claiming that some plates need a stiffer ink than others, that sometimes the appropriate tint is warmer, sometimes colder, and that it is only the etcher himself who can properly decide." * These comments help to explain why Ruelle du Pecheur, like so many other MacLaughlan architectural studies and landscape views, is a masterwork of the art of etching. * (James Laver, A History of British and American Etching, London, Ernest Benn Limited, 1929, pp. 120 & 121)

Robert Morris (Kansas City, Born, 1931 - Resides, New York City ): One of America's most famous avant guarde artists of our times, Robert Morris first studied as an engineer before turning to art and art criticism. In 1966 he graduated with his masters degree in art from Hunter College, New York. During the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's Morris played a key role in the movements of Minimalist sculpture and Process Art. Particularly in the mediums of sculpture and silkscreen his art gained a leading international reputation. Using such varied materials as aluminum, steel mesh, electroencephalogram readouts, felt and even dirt, Morris always challenged the viewer on themes ranging from the theories of Marcel Duchamp, to the effects of a nuclear holocaust and to the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Whether in the fields of printmaking or sculpture Morris's art continually forces the viewer to reassess his personal and social station in life and culture.
During the years America's most prestigious museums have hosted one man exhibitions of Robert Morris's art. These include the Whitney Museum of American Art (1970), the Art Institute of Chicago (1980) and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington (1990). In 1994 the Guggenheim Museum, New York, launched a major retrospective on the artist's work which later traveled to Paris and Hamburg.
