Emile-Othon Friesz (Le Havre, 1879 - Paris, 1949): One of the twentieth century's most important artists, Othon Friesz first studied art under Lhullier in his native Le Havre. His fellow students there were Dufy and Braque. The three artists became lifelong friends and clearly influenced one another's work throughout their careers. In 1898, Friesz moved to Paris and shortly thereafter studied in the studio of Bonnat. Othon Friesz's early art from this period shows an inclination towards impressionism. In the first years of the new century, however, he sought to break away from impressionist forms and he became associated with Henri Matisse. Together the two artists formed the vanguard of the Fauvist movement which was soon embraced by others such as Braque, Derain, Dufy, Manguin, Marquet, Van Dongen and De Vlaminck. The importance of Fauvism cannot be understated. With its bold display of colour and form it was the first truly revolutionary movement within modern art.
By 1907, Othon Friesz had established a strong reputation for his paintings throughout France, England and America. His first works of original graphic art appeared in 1910. Most of his initial prints were either woodcuts or wood engravings, but from 1920 on Friesz created mainly lithographs. These were published either as individual works of art or as illustrations for 'livres d'artiste', such as Rouen, by Andre Maurois (1929) or Petronius's, Satyricon (1949). The majority of Friesz's original lithographs depict either nudes or landscapes.
Scholars often draw strong parallels between Friesz's lithographs and Matisse's etchings and lithographs. The lifelong friendship of these two great masters and the fact that they often worked together led to a natural sharing of artisticideas. However, I also see elements of the two other great icons of Friesz's artistic language, Cezanne and Delacroix.

Susan Willard Flint: (Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1902 - 1984): Susan Willard Flint stands as an example of one of those artists from the first half of the twentieth century (most of whom were female) who were largely self-taught and created their art in relative obscurity. This was particularly true during the Depression era, when tough economic times made it virtually impossible to secure a livelihood in the fine arts. Flint created some of her finest prints during this time and exhibited her original lithographs with the Salons of America in 1934 and 1936. Her art sprang not from the halls of academies and museums but from what she witnessed around her. Each of her creations was guided by a pure and innocent joy and thus - for lack of a better term - her art falls within the realm of 'folk art'.
Scholars and critics are now paying a great deal of attention to 'folk art'. Unfettered by artistic technique and theory, it expresses unique emotions and concerns. During the poorest of times, Susan Willard Flint depicted the delights of domestic life and of special events, such as the circus. Thus her art became an important vehicle against the harsh realities of the day. Seen from this light, her original lithographs become even more wonderful.
