Philip Evergood (New York City, 1901 - 1973): A major figure in twentieth century American art, Philip Evergood was an accomplished painter, etcher, lithographer, sculptor, illustrator and writer. From 1918 to 1920, Evergood studied at Cambridge University in England. He then concentrated upon the fine arts at the Slade School, London (1920 to 1923), the Art Students League of New York (1923 to 1925) and at the Academie Julien in Paris. Evergood's first one man exhibition was held in New York in 1927.
From the beginning, Evergood established himself as a leading artist of social criticism. As an illustrator for both Time and Fortune magazines his social art was appreciated by millions during the 1930's. This led to many commissions and awards for Evergood, including prizes from the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Institute, the Corcoran Gallery and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. One scholar writes, "Jack Levine, Philip Evergood and Ben Shahn were the leading painters of the thirties whose work combined biting social comment with a distinctive personal vision. They were - and are - 'protest artists', but they are not social realists. Each evolved a unique artistic statement." * (Ralph E. Sikes, The Indignant Eye: The Artist as Social Critic, Boston, Beacon Press, 1976, pp. 355 & 356).
Although he had experimented with etching and lithography as early as the 1920's, Evergood did not begin to devote himself to original printmaking until after 1945. At this time he studied printmaking techniques at the famous New York studio of Stanley William Hayter. During the following twenty-five years he produced many major works of art in both lithography and etching.
Philip Evergood was a full member of the Art Students League of New York and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. His original prints and paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Tate Gallery, London, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Fritz Eichenberg (Cologne, Germany, 1901 - Rhode Island, 1990): Author, teacher, scholar and illustrator, the many great wood engravings of Fritz Eichenberg represent a triumph of form and imagination. Born in Cologne, he first studied there at the Municipal School of Applied Arts before finishing his education in the art of wood engraving at the Staatliche Akademie fur Graphische Kunste, in Leipzig. In one of his books, however, Eichenberg relates an influence much stronger than any academic training,
"How did I develop this anachronistic obsession? I grew up in a city 2,000 years old, with its ancient wood carvings of saints and sinners and its heritage of great printers and wood cutters. I must have been made aware early in my life of wood as a powerful medium for telling a story in images. After all, history has made Cologne into one great picture book, filled with the stories and legends of centuries." *
Fritz Eichenberg's first illustrated book, Till Eulenspiegel, was published in Leipzig in 1922. During the following ten years he worked as both an artist and reporter for various German publishers, particularly in Berlin. In 1933 Hitler came to power. Eichenberg had published a number of satirical attacks upon the dictator and was thus forced to flee. He settled in New York and began his teaching career there at the New School. In 1947 Eichenberg began his long association with the Pratt Institute. Becoming the chairman of the department of Graphic Arts in 1956, he founded the Pratt Graphic Arts Center. He also founded and edited the annual, Artist's Proof (1961), which was devoted solely to the graphic arts. In 1966, Fritz Eichenberg became the Chairman of the Art Department of the University of Rhode Island.
