View image and more information for Martin Barooshian's "Orpheus".
Martin Barooshian (Chelsea, Massachusetts, Born, 1929): A leading contemporary American printmaker, Martin Barooshian studied art at the School of the Boston Museum and at Tufts University. In 1956 he concluded his printmaking studies in Paris, under Stanley William Hayter and G. Dorfinant. Since 1950 the artist has published a fine oeuvre of creative etchings with strong elements of surrealism and mythological imagery.
Martin Barooshian's etchings have now been exhibited world wide. Today his art is included in such major international collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the New British Museum of American Art, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, IBM Corporation, Xerox Corporation and the Museum of Modern Art, New Delhi, India. Barooshian is a member of Boston Printmakers and the Philadelphia Print Club. He also served as President of the Society of American Graphic Artists.
"Orpheus" dates from 1961 and exists in four states. In the first three states the artist worked upon various aspects of both the etching and the aquatinted background. Barooshian pulled six impressions from each of these three incomplete states. For the fourth and final state the artist added the harp in the blue circle and embossed the entire portrait with a series rectangular and circular shapes, lending a strong sculptural quality to the image. This final and completed state was then published in a limited edition of fifty signed impressions.
View more information and other works of art by Pierre Bonnard.
Pierre Bonnard (Fontenay-aux-Roses, 1867 - Paris, 1947): When Pierre Bonnard's first poster appeared on Paris walls in March of 1891 it so impressed an older artist by the name of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec that he promptly announced to his friends that he would try his own hand at poster making. During the following years, Bonnard went on to establish himself as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century in many artistic mediums.
Pierre Bonnard first studied art at the Academie Julian with fellow classmates, Vuillard and Roussel. Together the three artists formed the cornerstone of the Nabis Group (1893 to 1899). Like most of the Nabis, Bonnard was influenced by the art of Gaugin and Redon. Yet even in his early paintings and posters Bonnard was unique and his work proved a much greater influence upon others.
Bonnard's association with the master publisher, Ambroise Vollard, resulted in a series of masterpieces in the medium of the 'livre d'artiste'. Beginning in 1900, with his lithographs for Verlaine's Parallelment, Bonnard established himself as one of the finest original artists of the book of the era. Future projects with Vollard included Daphnis and Chloe (1902), Dingo (1924) and "La Vie de Sainte Monique" (1930).
