Many of Sir Hubert von Herkomer's etchings -- particularly his figure studies -- deal with the Bavaria of his early childhood. Early German folklore and related literature was one of his lifelong interests and perhaps the book the young girl is reading from in this etching deals with that subject. Words of Comfort is, of course, also a brilliant examination of youth and age. The expression of wonder and awe captured in the face of the old woman is unforgettable. Words of Comfort is an original etching and drypoint engraving created by the British artist,Sir Hubert Von Herkomer. This impression is printed by Eugene Delatre in Paris upon upon hand-made, laid paper and with wide, full margins and published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, Fleet Street for the 1879 issue of "The Portfolio: An Artistic Periodical: Edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton". It is signed by Sir Hubert Von Herkomer in the plate (with his 'HH' monogramme) and dated '79. |

| Note: | Hubert von Herkomer: A prominent member of the Royal Academy, Royal Water-Colour Society and the Royal Engravers, Hubert von Herkomer left Bavaria for Southampton in 1857 and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Herkomer was equally well received for his paintings, sculptures and etchings. In this latter medium he was a tireless experimenter and he became accomplished in all forms of original graphic art. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire (1883-1904) and was the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894. Herkomer also wrote a great deal upon the arts. His most famous book, Etchings and Mezzotint Engraving, was published in 1892. In 1896 he was Knighted by Queen Victoria. |
| Eugene Delatre: A prominent early twentieth century French etcher and printer, Eugene Delatre studied art techniques under John Lewis Brown and under his famous father, Auguste Delatre. Auguste Delatre (1822-1907) had established himself as the most sought after printer of fine etchings during the latter nineteenth century. During this period he printed the etched plates of such prominent artists as Meryon, Bracquemond, Whistler, Seymour Haden and many others. Eugene Delatre continued this fine tradition into the twentieth century and printed the plates of Picasso and others. Eugene Delatre was a founding member of the Societe de la gravure en couleurs and a full, exhibiting member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. | |
| Words of Comfort was published by Seeley, Jackson, and Halliday, Fleet Street, London for the The Portfolio: An Artistic Periodical Edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton. Founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), it was published in annual issues from 1870 to 1892. Hamerton was the influential author of "Etching and Etchers", and for "The Portfolio: An Artistic Periodical", he regularly commissioned such fine etchers as Seymour Haden, D. Y. Cameron, Ernest George, Robert Walker Macbeth, Alfred Brunet-Debaines and E. P. Brandard to contribute original art. Today these etchings are collected as valuable examples of latter 19th century British and French art. | |
