| Note: |
Claude Goyrand: A fine seventeenth century French
engraver and etcher, Claude Goyrand is known for both his own original
etchings (such as this example) and for his etchings after the designs
of Claude and Stephano Della Bella. |
| |
Primarily a landscape artist, Claude Goyrand both resided and worked
in Rome during the 1640's. By 1650, however, he was established in Paris
and from this date until his untimely death in 1662 much of his work was
commissioned by the King of France. |
| |
According to G. C. Williamson, * The Ruins of an Old
Tower belongs to a series of four views Claude Goyrand was commissioned to
engrave around 1650. The other three titles are, The Castle of Bicetre,
Les Invalides and The Fountain in the Garden of Tivoli.
These engravings, with their fine attention to both detail and atmosphere,
are considered to be among Goyrand's greatest works of art. |
