Hans Erni

Hans Erni - Huit Pigeons or Eight Pigeons

Huit Pigeons (Eight Pigeons)

Hans Erni's original lithograph "Huit Pigeons" (Eight Pigeons) is a 'First and Sole State' printed upon fine laid paper as published in Geneva in the small edition of ninety five impressions in 1954. It is signed by Hans Erni in pencil and marked 'Eprueve d'artiste' (Artist Proof) along the lower margins in the lower left corner. "Huit Pigeons" was created one year after the publication of perhaps his most famous illustrated book, "Histoires Naturelles" This famous book contains 29 lithographs of animals and birds, all drawn with great freedom. This original lithograph is an extension and enlargement upon his ideas first conceived for this book and is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the Swiss artist, Hans Erni.

Title: Huit Pigeons (Eight Pigeons)
Artist: Erni, Hans (Lucerne, Switzerland, born, 1909)
Date: 1954
Medium: Original Colour Lithograph
Note: Hans Erni: An outstanding twentieth century painter, designer and illustrator, Hans Erni is today most highly sought after for his innovative original lithographs and etchings. First apprenticed to an architectural draughtsman, Hans Erni studied at the Ecole des Artes Metiers in Lucerne. He lived in Paris in 1928 - 29 to further his studies at the Academie Julian, and finally completed his studies in Berlin in the following year. Erni's first exhibited art was mainly in the medium of painting. His earliest work bears the influence of Picasso and of some of the painters of the surrealist movement. Even these earliest works, however, exhibit a very personal style nourished by classicism and constant experimenting.
After the Second World War, Hans Erni turned almost exclusively to original printmaking. Geneva was quickly becoming a major international centre for graphic art and Hans Erni was at the forefront. For the following forty-five years he created a fine oeuvre of over 750 original prints, most being colour lithographs. Unlike most contemporary artists -- Hans Erni never confined himself to any style of movement. Rather, he permitted the subject to guide his method of working. Hence, in Huit Pigeons (Eight Pigeons), Erni treated the surface of the lithographic stone rather like a watercolour or wash drawing in order to capture the characteristic spontaneity of the pigeons.

Raisonne: A. Cailler, Catalogue Raisonne de L'Oeuvre de Hans Erni: 1930 - 1957, Geneva, 1957.

Catalogue # 123, First and Sole State, as published in the signed, Limited edition of 95.

Note: Erni most often took four or five impressions of each of his prints apart from his regular edition and marked them, 'Eprueve D'Artist' (Artist Proof). This is so marked by the artist in the lower left margin. Hans Erni's Artist Proof Impressions are considered to be of somewhat higher value, as these were what he considered to be the finest impressions, which he kept of himself or gave to close friends.

Size: 27 3/4 X 21 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  UnMatted
Condition: 'First and Sole State' printed upon fine laid paper as published in Geneva in the small edition of 95 impressions in 1954 and with wide margins. Containing several slight creases in the outer margins as well as two ink stains on the verso of the paper. As the ink is the same color as that used for the actual lithograph, it is likely that the staining took place during the printing process. Fortunately, the paper is quite thick and only two small spots have bled through to the recto. This may be seen to the upper left, adjacent to the outstretched wing of the second highest pigeon and the second is at the top right corner margin, which does not intrude into the image itself. On the verso as well, slight paper scuffing exists along the back upper margin, due to previous matting. Else it is in good condition throughout. Signed by Hans Erni in pencil and marked 'Eprueve d'artiste' (Artist Proof) along the lower margins in the lower left corner. "Huit Pigeons" (Eight Pigeons) is a beautiful example of Hans Erni's creative genius.
